<p>A few steps from the Hotel de Ville in Paris, west of the Marais, the Pompidou Centre was inaugurated in 1977 to house the National Museum of Modern Art, and has become a vast complex of public access to culture.</p>

<p>The building on the right bank of the Seine opposite Notre Dame, became the center of municipal institutions in 1357 after its acquisition by Etienne Marcel who was then provost of merchants of Paris.</p>
